Because the suppression of DESIRE is also a courageous act... (क्योंकि इच्छा का दमन भी साहसी कार्य है...)

The great philosopher Aristotle has said that

"I consider the one who suppresses his desires more courageous than the one who is victorious over the enemy."

His idea is of visionary importance. Undoubtedly, there is an infinite flow of desires in the mind of human. They are capable of fulfilling some of these and fulfill some of them, but the fulfillment of many remains either incomplete or they become unable to make efforts for them.

It is worth considering whether desire should be considered an enemy or a friend. In this perspective there is a need to understand the origin of desire. Desire is an emotion that can be created in one's mind towards a particular thing, person etc. For example the primary desire of a beggar would be to satisfy his hunger whereas the primary desire of a corrupt official would be to prove his selfishness.

1. So there are different dimensions of desire. Which of these dimensions is logically correct and which is wrong, it also largely depends on the circumstances. In general, every individual strives for his all-round development. This effort is the action form of his will. Otherwise, if it is desireless, then any effort can be considered futile.

2. Desire acts as a stimulus. It gives a feeling to the individual to fulfill the desirable necessities of his life as well as his role at the socio-cultural level. In such a situation, desire acts like a friend. Just as a friend is aware of the situations and advises his friend to do the right thing so that he is not harmed, similarly desire also urges the person to adopt the right working style. But a deceitful friend is far more deadly than an enemy.

3. A person who conquers an enemy may be stronger, more powerful and a better diplomat, but the situation becomes complicated when a deceitful friend is in the form of an enemy. Similarly, when immoral and inhuman desire starts roaming in the conscience of a person then it is not easy to control it.

4. In such a situation, when he adopts a subversive form bypassing the social-legal rules, then his desires have fatal consequences. For example, in recent times incidents of rape have been seen at various places in India. A man destroys a woman's life to satisfy his inhuman sexual desire. If it is the goal of human to create such desires, then it is better that the human race should not exist.

** The suppression of such inhuman desire is not possible with a momentary effort. For this a meditation/sadhana is required which accumulates various positive tendencies in the person. To control these situations, there seems to be a need for guards like determination, restraint, purity of mind, tolerance, empathy and contentment. These are the tendencies which guide the person to perform the proper duty. This enables him to suppress the immoral and inhuman desire arising in his mind.

Therefore one needs to give a right direction and a positive character to the infinite flow of desire to follow the moral path!!!

  1. Courage is the name of doing the work which one is afraid to do. A handful of determined people, who have a firm belief in their goal, can change the course of history. --- Mahatma Gandhi
